Westport voters to have say on Prop 2½ override

Voters will have a chance at the ballot to approve a Proposition 2½ override, which would permanently raise taxes to support budgetary increases.
If approved, the override would provide a boost of $1.5 million to the fiscal 2011 budget.
The special vote will be held on April 13, when polls are open for the annual town election. It would also need to pass at Town Meeting May 4.
The town’s tax rate would rise by 7.7 percent — to 6.75 from 6.27 — if the override is approved. A homeowner whose property is valued at $200,000 would pay an extra $96 per year, according to the treasurer’s office. A tax bill for a home valued at $500,000 would rise by $240 annually.
Selectmen approved placing the override question on the ballot during their meeting Monday.
Selectman Gary Mauk, who has often called for fiscal restraint, was opposed.
