Westport takes inventory of handicapped-accessible spots

An inventory has begun on the handicapped accessibility of town properties, including beaches and schools, in order to compile a report making the town eligible for grants to improve access.
The report, called an Americans with Disabilities Act transition plan, should be completed by the end of the year, said Elaine Ostroff of the town Commission on Disability. With a finished ADA transition plan, Westport can apply to the state Department of Housing and Community Development for grants that could enable to town to, say, make it easier for people to get to Cherry and Webb Beach.
The consultant hired to do the report, Valerie Fletcher of the Institute for Human Centered Design, told selectmen Monday that disabilities include many conditions besides being wheelchair-bound. Arthritis and asthma are two of the most common disabilities, she said.
