Westport Special Town Meeting voters show up in droves

Tuesday’s Special Town Meeting attendance was about 7 percent short of an attendance record for the town.
According to the town, 1,456 voters attended, with an overwhelming majority voting in favor of using $141,000 in reserves to fill a school budget deficit and avoid layoffs.
Only once did more people show up for a Town Meeting, according to the town clerk’s office. In 1992, 1,562 attended a meeting for a vote on whether to support a system for recalling elected officials. Many voters were angry at the Board of Selectmen for not re-appointing Carlton Lees as the town’s attorney.
The article failed, 757 to 744.
The pro-schools group Westport Cares, which organized a petition to hold Tuesday’s meeting, said on Wednesday it has organized as a municipal ballot-question committee and is in the process of obtaining non profit status.
