Westport officials seek more cooperation between communities

Town officials said Monday they are more optimistic that Westport will work with Fall River and other communities to try to avoid another instance of massive flooding on the Watuppa ponds.
Selectmen, the town administrator, fire chief and other officials toured pond-front areas for the second time in four days on Monday, seeing a drop of only a few inches in the water level that surrounded some houses and forced the town to condemn six homes.
Since Westport officials complained last week that the needs of their residents were being ignored by state and federal officials, U.S. Rep. Barney Frank toured properties along the North and South Watuppa ponds and an immediate goal is to get the area money to rebuild.
