West Nile Virus found in mosquitoes in Westport
Six mosquito pools taken from inside last week’s aerial-spraying zone have tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis, and public-health officials are urging people not to let last week’s air attack on the disease give them false security.
Also, the state Department of Public Health confirmed that the West Nile Virus had been detected in the Culiseta melanura mosquito for the first time this year. The mosquito sample was collected Aug. 3 in the northern part of Westport.
No human cases of WNV or EEE have been confirmed to date this year, although there have been cases of WNV in humans during the last five years.
While WNV can infect people of all ages, people older than 50 are at higher risk for severe disease. WNV is usually transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Last year, there were 26 WNV positive mosquito samples in the state, with one horse from [...]
