Weekend shark sighting in Westport has officials on alert
Town beaches remain open but a Saturday shark sighting is keeping officials alert, said Harbor Master Richard Earle Monday.
“I think the last one was reported Saturday night,” Earle said, adding that the shark was spotted off Horseneck Beach at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
“The report I had was that a swimmer spotted it,” Earle said, adding that he didn’t know how far off shore the shark was at the time of that sighting.
“I think they kept people waist deep over the weekend,” Earle said, alluding to a state policy keeping swimmers from going too deep into the water when there have been shark sightings in the area.
Earle said his staff went Saturday and Sunday but made no sightings.
“It’s pretty foggy out here right now,” Earle said at 10:30 a.m. Monday. “We’ll be able to go out later. Maybe we’ll have some sightings today.”
