Viveiros wants to shift decisions from committee to schools

Mayoral candidate Cathy Ann Viveiros said she wants to turn how business is done in the school district on its head.
Standing in front of the Mary Fonseca Elementary School a day before classes were set to begin, Viveiros said she envisions leading the School Committee in a new direction that would focus on site-based management of schools rather than dictates from School Department administrators on school decisions, including budgeting.
She said such a system would allow principals, teachers and parents to decide if a classroom needs a paraprofessional versus other positions such as teacher coaches. To free up funds for individual school budgets, Viveiros said she would call for a reallocation of “non-direct resources.” She said the system would allow schools to create individual recovery plans.
