Tiverton Town Council considers postponing Financial Town Meeting
The Town Council is considering changing the date of its annual Financial Town Meeting.
During Monday’s council meeting, Councilor Louise Durfee filed a motion requesting Town Solicitor Andrew Teitz draft a proposal for the Rhode Island General Assembly authorizing the Town Council to change the date of the Financial Town Meeting from May to September.
A special meeting has been called for Monday so that the council can vote to send Teitz’s proposal to the state Legislature. Any change in the date of the Financial Town Meeting must be approved by the General Assembly.
The goal of moving the meeting to the fall is so the town will have a better idea of how much funding it will receive from the state.
The town has requested a budget of $39.6 million. The Budget Committee has countered with a figure closer to $39.2 million, which would allow Tiverton to keep the state-mandated tax increase [...]
