Tiverton council gives nod to postponing FTM
The Town Council approved by a 5-2 vote its support of proposed legislation that would allow Rhode Island cities and towns to postpone budget and financial town meetings for fiscal 2011.
Town Solicitor Andrew Teitz drafted the proposal, which would allow Tiverton to postpone its Financial Town Meeting for up to 90 days.
A copy of the resolution will be sent to other municipalities in hopes they will support the measure. It should reach the General Assembly within the next couple of days. The town hopes to receive a decision from the Legislature within a couple of weeks.
Initially, the plan only mentioned Tiverton, but Teitz determined that state law does not allow municipalities to postpone budget decisions that are usually preset by town charter without a formal charter amendment process.
