STRANDED: Westport officials frustrated by lack of communication
Some houses have become islands to themselves on the Westport side of South Watuppa Pond, and officials said they were frustrated by a lack of communication from Fall River and state officials. A National Guard crew filling sandbags for homes on the pond was pulled suddenly and sent to Freetown, they said, and visits from the governor and two Congressmen did not include a stop in Westport.
“Our deepest concern,” Town Administrator Michael Coughlin said, “is that while the response takes days, the recovery takes weeks and months. If they’re not here now, how can we expect them to be here during the next weeks and months?”
Selectmen said Westport residents have been hit as hard by flooding as anywhere else, but haven’t been assured by officials that their needs will be met. The impact of record rainfall also took a little longer to push South Watuppa’s water levels far beyond its [...]
