Stimulus funds to bring 10 Fall River police officers back

A federal grant totaling $2.1 million will help pave the way for a total of 10 police officers to return to patrolling city streets by Friday.
City officials were told Tuesday morning of a U.S. Department of Justice grant given to the city by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, part of the  American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The grant award, submitted by city officials in April, will provide 100 percent of the approved salary and benefits for 10 police officer positions over a three-year period, with the city required to pick up the fourth year as a condition of the grant.
The Justice Department grants were awarded to a total of 1,046 law enforcement agencies from all 50 states, including nearly $29 million in grants to fund the hiring and rehiring of 131 law enforcement officers in Massachusetts.
