SouthCoast safety officials take aim at underage drinking

During a time of year for celebrations with proms and graduations paving the way to summer vacation, the joy is often shattered by tragedy.
Every year the same story tends to play out: teenagers with full lives ahead of them have their dreams and aspirations cut short due to drunken driving, and in some cases it’s the people who helped lead them to success that also put the bottle of alcohol in their hand.
In an effort to remind parents about their role in keeping young people safe during this time of year, law enforcement agencies, educators and elected officials across Bristol County are teaming together to tell parents, and liquor store and bar owners, “Don’t serve alcohol to teens.”
The initiative was announced Wednesday morning on the steps of the New Bedford School Department’s Administration building as prom and graduation season rapidly approaches.
