Regionalization tackled at Somerset public forum
About 40 people came to the high school auditorium Monday night to discuss the possibility of a regional high school serving Berkley and Somerset.
The town forum included the Berkley/Somerset Regionalization Committee, along with Christine Lynch, director of school governance for Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and Andy Cherullo, chief financial officer for the Massachusetts School Building Authority. The group discussed the details of an alliance and the regionalization committee presented its draft report recommending a shared new school for the towns.
Committee chairwoman Julie Ramos-Gagliardi said if Somerset chooses not to regionalize with Berkley and accept MSBA funding for a new school, it still must spend about $47 million in repairs for the deteriorating high school.
“Taxes will increase with or without regionalization,” Ramos-Gagiardi said.
