Red Sox president Lucchino speaks at Westport benefit for Catholic education

Wanting to say thank you to the “heart of Red Sox nation,” team president and CEO Larry Lucchino made a visit to the SouthCoast on Tuesday.
Lucchino was the guest speaker at the 15th annual St. Mary’s Education Fund Fall Scholarship Dinner held at White’s of Westport.
The Diocese of Fall River established the fund in 1991 with proceeds of the sale of the former St. Mary’s Home in New Bedford, an orphanage sponsored by the diocese. The goal was to provide financial assistance for families seeking a Catholic education.
The St. Mary’s Education Fund will be providing aid to 727 students this school year, and has raised $7 million since the mid 1990s. The first scholarship dinner was held in 1995 and a summer social held on Cape Cod was added in 1998. Between the two events, the fund has raised $592,000 this year.
