PASSING THE GAVEL: Cassidy named acting clerk magistrate

On a day when District Court was closed for an extended lunch to fete a large group of retiring staff, it was announced that attorney David J. Cassidy of Somerset had been named as acting clerk magistrate for the court.
District Court Chief Justice Lynda M. Connolly visited the court Friday morning to tell Cassidy she had named him to that post, effective Monday, following the retirement of Clerk Magistrate Ronald A. Valcourt.
Philip McCue, director of court operations in Boston, confirmed the appointment.
Cassidy, who has been first assistant clerk magistrate for the past 10 years, also served as acting clerk magistrate for one year after the death of Thomas Kitchen in 1998.
Kitchen hired Cassidy as an assistant clerk magistrate in 1985 after he worked for four years at Superior Court in Fall River under William Grant.
Cassidy obtained a law degree from New England School of Law in 1980, and passed the [...]
