Official praises creation of historic study committee

The president of the Preservation Society of Fall River hailed the support of Mayor Robert Correia and the City Council in creating a study committee that could lead to designating Local Historic Districts.
“The mayor is poised to initiate an historic event in Fall River,” Jim Soule said in a statement.
He said these designations “support the preservation of our heritage, history and architecture, creation of middle and upper class real estate markets, buoy property values, increase skilled labor demand (and) tourism.
“We can create a demand,” Soule said, “of people who want to live in a neighborhood particularly because of its historic integrity and property values.
“It will make a neighborhood stand out and become desirable,” he said.
Soule said the recently drafted city master plan recommended the designation, which differs in its potential impact with National Historic Districts.
The Highlands, Lower Highlands, Corky Row and Steepbrook fall under those national categories, Soule said, [...]
