New Bedford businessman Moniz announces run for Governor’s Council

Walter Moniz will launch his Fall River-area campaign for a seat on the Governor’s Council at 7 p.m. Thursday at T.A. Restaurant.
Moniz, a New Bedford businessman and aide to former New Bedford mayor Frederick Kalisz Jr., is seeking the Democratic nomination for the seat currently held by Carole A. Fiola. The primary election will be held Sept. 14.
The Governor’s Council consists of eight representatives elected for two-year terms from specially created districts across the state. It advises the governor on judicial appointments, such as judges, clerk magistrates, notaries and justices of the peace, and offers counsel on payments from the state treasury, pardons and commutations. District 1 comprises 48 cities and towns in Barnstable, Nantucket, Dukes and parts of Bristol and Plymouth counties.
Moniz said he will transform a “low-profile position, part-time position” into a full-time platform for “improving the quality of life in our cities’ neighborhoods.”
