Mahjoory discusses his ambitions as Somerset selectman
Thirty minutes before being sworn in as the town’s new selectman Tuesday afternoon, Stu Mahjoory took some time to reflect on his Monday night victory and on his plans for the future.
“You don’t run if you don’t think you can win,” Mahjoory said. “I knew it would be tough.”
Mahjoory beat incumbent Selectman Lorne Lawless 1,649 votes to 1,523 votes — a 126 vote margin.
During debates, Mahjoory mentioned Lawless was also running for the The First Bristol and Plymouth Senate seat currently held by Joan Menard. He said Lawless could not serve adequately in both offices, though Lawless said he would quit his job in the insurance field to devote himself to his new political responsibilities.
“I think that helped,” Mahjoory said of Lawless’ decision to try to capture two elected positions. “I think people were looking for a younger view.”
