Mahjoory bests Lawless for Somerset selectman seat

Newcomer Stu Mahjoory eked out a win over incumbent Lorne Lawless for the one open seat on the Board of Selectmen.
Mahjoory was the only candidate in Monday night’s Somerset town election to beat an incumbent.
A bank branch manager, Mahjoory took 50.67 percent of the vote, or 1,649 votes to Lawless’ 1,523, or 46.8 percent of the vote.
Mahjoory’s 4-percent margin of victory made him very happy.
“I’m ecstatic,” he said Monday night. “I had a lot of great people behind me.
“I’m looking forward to doing a great job for the town,” he said.
During debates, Mahjoory made much of the fact that Lawless was also running for the 1st Bristol and Plymouth Senate seat currently held by Joan Menard, saying Lawless could not serve adequately in both offices.
Lawless, however, said he would quit his job in the insurance field to devote himself to his new political responsibilities.
The race wasn’t at all tight [...]
