Laid off Fall River police officer goes above the call of duty

Eighteen months ago, police officer Edmund Desmarais was on duty when he was called to respond to an early morning domestic situation. Despite being one of 48 police officers laid off in March, Desmarais, instead of donning his uniform pulls on a suit and heads to court in an effort to enforce the law.
Desmarais has refused to let his employment status stand in the way of ensuring suspected criminals end up behind bars.
He is being praised by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office for helping secure a five- to six-year state prison sentence for Thomas DePriest, after DePriest pleaded guilty to a number of charges including stalking prior to a trial in New Bedford Superior Court. DePriest was will also serve a six-year probationary term following his release.
