Hague: Mayor ‘ignored’ bid to boost school budget
Mayor Robert Correia declined to sign the enabling order that would have allowed the City Council to use state legislation for increasing the school budget, Council Vice President Raymond E. Hague reported Tuesday.
“I never heard of such a thing. The executive office just ignores it and it gets ignored,” said Hague, adding he will not accept the interpretation by City Clerk Carol A. Valcourt that there is no recourse.
There was no veto of the order, and Valcourt said under language for this legislation there’s no process to override Correia’s inaction.
With a city ordinance the council approves, if the mayor does not sign it, the charter stipulates it becomes law after 10 days. This situation is different, Valcourt said, reiterating what she told Hague.
“You have to have the mayor’s approval to accept that legislation, according to that legislation,” she said. “It doesn’t leave any leeway, in my opinion.”
