Governor, top brass visit Freetown veterans
Veterans at the Freetown VFW Post 6643 were visited Thursday by Gov. Deval Patrick and some of the top veterans officials in the state and country.
From his wheelchair, Iraq veteran James Crosby of Winthrop said the face-to-face meeting helped veterans “connect” with the governor and military brass.
“It’s really great to feel that support,” he said.
As part of a day of honoring veterans and active members of the armed forces, Patrick, U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and state Secretary of Veterans’ Services Tom Kelley shared lunch at Post 6643 with servicemen and women.
During brief remarks, Patrick, the first governor to visit the Freetown VFW, thanked the active and retired soldiers, sailors and Marines and promised to continue improving programs for veterans and the troops coming back from war.
Mabus congratulated Patrick for expanding programs for military families and other veterans’ programs in state.
