FROM THE PULPIT: Celebrating out freedom to serve others

As always seems to be the case, the Fourth of July sneaks up on us unexpectedly. It’s hard to believe we’re half way through the year 2010 and it’s already the time for parades and cookouts.
But once we realize what time of year it is, we are also invited to reflect on the history and the hopes of this country. And, of course, one of the virtues that Americans have extolled throughout the years is freedom. But, we aren’t always necessarily clear about what we mean by that word. So, what is freedom?  
Well, for Americans, the heart of how we tend to understand freedom is that it’s freedom from being compelled by outside influences.
Pilgrims and Puritans came to this land in the 17th century so they could worship as they saw fit, rather than under the strictures of the Church of England. American colonists in the 18th century wearied [...]
