Freetown considers use of solar panels

The town is considering using solar energy at its transfer station on Howland Road. If it decides to do so, it would be town’s first major Green Team initiative.
Interim Town Administrator John F. Healey told the Board of Selectmen last week that he is investigating the possibility of installing a solar array at the town’s transfer station.
He said he is still investigating all costs for such a project and grants the town could seek.
Healey said new arrays do not generate as much energy as earlier solar-power systems, but they are not as susceptible to inclement weather. He said a commonly used solar array is the size of a roof shingle.
“These look like a shade,” he said.
Healey told the board that Norton and Holbrook use arrays to generate power and sell it to the energy grid.
He said both communities are expected to save $200,000 to $300,000 [...]
