Former police sergeant running for Governor’s Council seat

Jeffrey Gregory, a 22-year veteran of the city’s police department who achieved the rank of sergeant, said he will seek the Democratic nomination for the District 1 Governor’s Council seat being vacated by Carole Fiola.
A resident of Rock Street, Gregory said he feels it is important for the city to continue to hold representation on the council.
“I was only going to get into the race if she got out,” Gregory said of Fiola. “I’d like to keep the position in our area.”
Fiola announced she is not seeking re-election after holding the seat for 10 years. Gregory is currently being challenged for the Democratic nomination by Walter Moniz, a New Bedford businessman and aide to former New Bedford Mayor Frederick Kalisz Jr. Gregory is also being challenged by Barnstable resident Oliver Cipollini, a former first assistant magistrate for the state’s juvenile court in the Cape and Islands/Plymouth district.
