Fire breaks out at Eastern Television on Bedford Street
A two-alarm fire broke out in the second floor showroom at Eastern Television causing extensive damage.
Eastern co-owner Judy Charest, whose business has been in her husband Paul’s family since 1946, said she was alone in the building just before 11 a.m. when a resident came rushing in to warn of a fire.
“I was at the computer and I could smell smoke and just then, this guy came in and said he could see that the building was on fire,” said Judy. “I went upstairs and could see flames, so we both vacated the building.”
Judy said there was no one else in the building at the time.
“You could see the smoke and fire coming out from where the air-conditioner was,” said Edward Walsh, the man who pulled over his vehicle and went inside the 1196 Bedford St. business to warn Judy Charest.
