Fall River police officer cleared after firing pistol
A police sergeant who fired his service weapon during a street brawl has been cleared to return to duty following a review.
Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Mauretti said an investigation by the Office of Professional Standards and review by the shooting review board determined Sgt. David Gouveia acted appropriately when he fired his service pistol.
“After a review of the policies and procedures of the Fall River Police Department, it is overwhelmingly clear that Sgt. Gouveia’s use of force was appropriate and that his intent to stop the deadly assault upon himself and others was justified accordingly,” Mauretti said. “Sgt. Gouveia has been placed back on full duty and will continue to work in the Special Operations Division.”
Chief John M. Souza said Gouveia’s actions were allowable given the circumstances.
