Fall River city councilors sign resolution against casino deal

The prospect of losing the SouthCoast BioPark and its $17 million in state funding in favor of a casino resort on the 300-acre tract near Route 24 spurred four city councilors Tuesday to file a resolution opposing that effort, council Vice President Linda Pereira said.
“This is an opportunity,” Pereira said of Monday’s joint announcement between the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and Mayor Will Flanagan, “but, quite frankly, listen to everyone’s proposals.
“This is way too fast,” she said.
The resolution filed by President Joseph Camara and Councilors Leo Pelletier and Brad Kilby states their “opposition to siting a casino at the land dedicated to creation of the SouthCoast BioPark.”
It asked the Redevelopment Authority, which owns the BioPark land and is considering the sale to the tribe, and its staff at the Fall River Office of Economic Development to consider their opposition.
