CULTURE CLUB: Greene students visit new countries on speedy ‘tour’
It was a whirlwind week for a group of first graders at the William S. Greene Elementary School in Fall River.
Students in Cheryl Macedo and Donna Medeiros’ classes “traveled” to Portugal, Italy, Mexico and China as part of a lesson on international cultures.
They learned how to find the four countries on a map, what the capitals are, popular inventions from the locales and other interesting tidbits. At the end of the week, the classes put on a multicultural feast to celebrate what they learned.
“They were so into it,” said Macedo. “When we were reading about the countries, they wanted to learn. Some of the parents told me, ‘I can’t believe how much they’ve learned.’”
The students created passports and took to the skies aboard either “Air Macedo” or “Air Medeiros,” learning which way they had to travel to get to each country.
