COOKING THE BOOKS: Trustees want to turn vacant restaurant into library

The Library Trustees is looking into buying a former church and restaurant to convert it into a library for the Assonet section of town.
It would cost approximately $420,000 to rehab the South Main Street building. It would replace the Guilford H. Hathaway Library, which was built in 1895.
Trustees member Michael McCue said a basic outline was forwarded to the Board of Selectmen on Monday. A more extensive plan will be finalized over the next three days, he said.
This is the second time in six years that authorities have considered turning the dormant building into a library. The 2,568-square-foot building is more then three times the size of the 800-square-foot Hathaway Library.
The South Main Street originally housed St. Bernard Church. It later became a restaurant, operating under the names Buffington and later Pantheon. Most recently, it was home to a flooring company.
