City Council votes down anti-casino resolution
City Councilor Pat Casey said she’s lived in the Mount Hope area for 67 years and had never seen a foreclosed home.
“There are three right now. They cannot pay their mortgages because they cannot get a job,” Casey said, making an impassioned plea Tuesday night to reject the resolution four of her colleagues submitted against the proposed resort casino option on 300 acres set aside for the SouthCoast BioPark by Route 24.
Taking the council mantle for Mayor Will Flanagan, Casey said, “A casino is a very diversified employer. Our people would be getting jobs that they need now.”
Several organizers in the building trades have planned a rally today at 3:45 p.m. at Government Center to promote job needs shortly before the Redevelopment Authority meets at 4:30 p.m. to reconvene last week’s meeting to vote on selling the BioPark land, with conditions, to the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe.
