Bill would halt plans for Sakonnet River Bridge toll

Wherever he goes, state Rep. Jay Edwards hears about Gov. Donald Carcieri’s proposed toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge.
“I can be at Stop and Shop or out walking my dog and someone approaches me about the toll,” said Edwards, who estimates he has received between 75 and 100 correspondences from angry constituents.
Edwards, D-Tiverton, whose district encompasses neighborhoods on both sides of the Sakonnet River Bridge, has introduced legislation that will prohibit tolls from being implemented on the bridge.
The bill would also keep the bridge under the jurisdiction of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. Under an article in Carcieri’s proposed budget, the Sakonnet River Bridge would be placed under the management of the Rhode Island Bridge and Transit Authority, which has the authority to place a toll on the bridge.
