Bill would add another 1,575 charter school seats in Fall River
A sweeping education reform package approved by the state Legislature Thursday could lead to openings for families looking to enroll their children in charter schools.
Through the bill, the state will have the authority to remove the cap on charter schools. Caps would be raised from 9 to 18 percent in the lowest performing 10 percent of school districts.
Massachusetts Charter Public Schools Association spokesman Dominic Slowney said that in Fall River’s case the change means another 1,575 charter school seats.
Currently Atlantis Charter School is the only charter school within Fall River to serve the needs of families seeking to enroll a charter school. Mathieu Pilotte, director of Atlantis’ Family Learning Center, said the school currently has an enrollment of 733 students in kindergarten to the eighth grade.
