BCC raises funds for Haitian students to visit homeland

Bristol Community College is looking for help raising money so that nine Haitian students can return to their ravished country to see their families and help rebuild.
Soon after the Jan. 12 earthquake, which killed an estimated 250,000 people, the college asked students from Haiti if they could help in any way. About 20 students came forward — and what they wanted more than anything was to go home, said Steven Ozug, the college’s vice president for students and enrollment management.
One of the students who will be heading home is Darlene Galiotte, whose sister and her five children have been left homeless from the earthquake. Galiotte, who moved to the United States 25 years ago, has hardly been able to talk with her sister since the quake because communication is unreliable and phone calls are expensive for Haitians, she said.
