Attempted child abduction reported at Fall River’s Kennedy Park

Police are increasing patrols around Kennedy Park after an alleged attempted abduction of an Atlantis Charter School student Friday morning.
Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Mauretti said officer Patrick McNerney responded to the school’s Park Street campus Friday after a physical education teacher informed the school’s principal that a student reported a man in a white van asked him to get into the vehicle.
Mauretti said the incident happened between 8:30 and 9:40 a.m. while a gym class used the park’s baseball field near the corner of Middle and South Main streets. He said two students were asked to retrieve a soccer ball that went over the field’s fence. When a 10-year-old boy who retrieved the ball returned, Mauretti said, the teacher reported the child “looked scared." The boy told the teacher that a man in a white van called over to him and asked him to come into his van.
