Assessor’s report tackles controversial property values

Property owners have submitted more than 500 abatement applications, slightly more than the year-ago total, the city assessor said.
Pamela Davis has been asked to appear at Tuesday’s City Council meeting, her second visit to council chambers to discuss the issue. Davis submitted a report to City Council after several homeowners publicly questioned why their properties were assessed higher during a devastating real estate slump.
The Board of Assessors reviewed 54 applications earlier this month — 12 pertaining to penalty issues and the rest seeking abatements, Davis said. Of the other 42, the board denied 15 and the remaining 27 “were given some adjustments,” Davis said.
One of the assessment that changed was for a home owned by Bryan Palumbo at 458 Maple St. Palumbo, owner of a Taunton pizzeria, bought the property last summer and saw the assessment jump from $417,200 to $642,800, He said he was afraid his family would be [...]
