As Fall River family remain jailed, elder woman they allegedly neglected dies
The woman who prosecutors say was neglected by her family and left to sit in her own urine and feces for at least a month, without grooming or cleaning, died on Thursday.
The Bristol County district attorney’s office, which announced her death, said an investigation into the alleged abuse will continue, though the office isn’t ready to make a determination on whether to press more severe charges, spokesman Gregg Miliote said.
The woman’s body will be given to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy, he said.
Prosecutor Steven Gagne called it “one of the most egregious and horrible cases of elder abuse anyone has ever seen.”
Gagne said at an arraignment in District Court on Tuesday that if the woman were to die because of the neglect that more severe charges — manslaughter or murder — could be forthcoming. “That’s still very much an option,” he said Thursday.
