A welcome homecoming for Fall River’s new assessor
The new assessor, Richard Gonsalves, took office Monday and said he will emphasize how neighborhoods are appraised for values in his hometown.
On the day Gonsalves took office, his boss, Mayor Will Flanagan, announced another appointment. Ida Geraldes, a 25-year city employee, has been named as the new tax collector. She starts Monday.
Geraldes has been an employee benefits administrator in the human resources office for the last three years. Both recent hirings became necessary after Flanagan fired the previous tax collector and assessor in June.
Gonsalves has nearly 30 years experience in the field, including 18 years as Seekonk’s assessor.
In that town, Gonsalves helped initiate a state generic CAMA assessing system that was adopted by 80 communities and is still in use, he said.
“My style is to go out there and review the community,” Gonsalves said.
